Opinions from Julien Stock, Richard Cocke, Xavier Salomon and Diana Gisolfi. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/53e3b71fe4b0109e0ab09de5/38e1de08-951d-4d2d-9f5b-3f2ea2d92dc5/Pounceysphotoarchivehand.jpg Veronese's Close Circle - BACKGROUND In the drawing at right from the Pouncey/Stock archive, one can see St. George with a broken lance standing against the base of a column, looking up to a heavenly apparition—the virgin and child surrounded by angels making music while St. George’s helmet is borne aloft. One finds a similar arrangement of saints in our drawing: St. Peter holding keys, St. Paul referencing or reading a book held by a young man, St. George, and male and female figures looking on – “simply extra figures, not recognizable characters,” suggested Xavier Salomon. In our drawing, the column is missing and a small drawing of St. George and the Princess is added to the bottom right. Many agree that this drawing is a design related to the bottom half of the Altar of Martyrdom of St. George in Braida, in Verona. Xavier Salomon wrote, “I am absolutely convinced that the drawing reflects an intermediary stage in a long series of drawings — between the 1550s and 1560s — for the Saint George altarpiece,” which proceeds from Caroto’s original altar depicting St. George’s bravery in slaying the dragon to his Veronese’s altar depicting St. George’s martyrdom. Images of these altars can be seen here. The St. George altar was commissioned by the Canons Regular of San Giorgio in Alga, who presided at San Giorgio in Braida. The canons were described by Diana Gisolfi as, “an erudite group more than capable of determining subject matter and selecting good artists at a time when the Council of Trent had just written guidelines for church art, stressing that it should inspire piety.” There’s no question that the iconographical considerations were in flux: from a commemoration to St. George rescuing a princess to St. George being martyred for his faith. In his book Veronese, Xavier Salomon begins his chapter “Stonecutter to Noble Painter” detailing a transcript of questions posed to Veronese by the tribunal of the Inquisition on July 18, 1571. One can appreciate immediately the tribunal’s attention to artistic expression, even for an artist like Veronese, accomplished and of good character, as Salomon suggests through a quote from Ridolfi, “he ruled his family with great prudence, keeping his children away from harmful acquaintances and practices, teaching them with every piety about religious observance and moral disciplines (a worthy painter should always be correct and cautious).” Questions remain as to the exact hand and function of our drawing. Clues are likely to be found in an understanding of workshop members active at the time, their complex practice and roles, and the evolution of ideas, and the collaborative nature of other master artists sharing ideas for various projects as Sergio Marinelli has suggested in Disegni Veronesi al Louvre 1500-1630. One can clearly see the experimentation by comparing a detail from drawing and a drawing attributed to Veronese by Rearick (sent by Julien Stock). In Collaboration and Replicas in the Shop of Veronese, Artibus et Historiae, Vo. 28, No 55, pp 77-86, Diana Gisolfi wrote: “In the Venetian family workshop, staffed by numerous family members and others, a Veronese is a product of the workshop. The signature of Paolo Veronese assures quality control and supervision, as does the head of an architectural firm today.” She described a Veronese family inventory of drawings from 1682 as revealing “a complex practice of drawings varied in media, indicating different functions.” In an email about our drawing, Gisolfi wrote, “One possibility is that your drawing is a workshop copy perhaps of a portion of a modello drawing related to an idea for the San Giorgio altarpiece. And there is the possibility that it is related to a different commission involving St. George.” Richard Cocke pointed out that the “composition is a version of both the lost Coccina altar from San Zaccaria of 1562 and the high altar in San Sebastiano c 1565.” As mentioned before, the small sketch of St. George and the Princess seems to be an addition. Architectural details from other designs – columns, for instance – are not present. Such details point to an element of experimentation. Cocke added, in agreement with Salomon: “There is, however a commission with which it might (just) be associated…S. Giorgio in Braida, since it shares the dedication to Sts. Peter, Paul and George. In his Veronese’s Drawings: A Catalogue Raisonne,” Cocke observed that his chiaroscuro drawings executed in the 1550’ and 1560’s exemplified a sense of invention in conventional subjects, both religious and allegorical and in unusual variations on well-established themes, and were executed with brilliance and fluidity in the white heightening that was copied but never equaled.” Many scholars have pointed out the unevenness of our drawing, using phrases like “weak” or “strong” areas, observing the possibility of more than one hand, suggesting an editing process of some sort. Manetto was one of the seven founders of the Order of the Servants of Mary [Servites]. It was created for the chapel that bears their name in the Basilica della Santissima Anunziata in Florence. The altar depicts Manetto dell'Antella: the abbot, clad in sacred vestments, reaching towards the cripple with his left hand, while his right hand points to the statue of the Virgin on the altar, suggesting that the healing described in the 15th-century Dialogus de Origine Ordinis by Fra Paolo Attavanti was a consequence of Mary’s intercession. In the lower left foreground, a kneeling nobleman seen from behind, wearing a red robe points in the direction of the young cripple, while conversing with a group of intellectuals and clerics looking on from the left with other figures in an attitude of devout wonder. Can you imagine what he might be saying? The cripple’s body is inclined to suggest an awkward or unstable gait. The discarded wooden crutch on the floor is evidence of the physical transformation that has taken place. When that church was destroyed, the painting was installed as a ceiling painting in the St. Luke’s Chapel. Here, Mary is depicted as Regina Coeli, Queen of Heaven, no doubt inspired by mosaics in Ravenna. She and the open-armed baby Jesus are surrounded by angels. The golden light suggests her reign. In this way she personifies the church. St. Bernard below, with outstretched arms, receives the vision. His face reflects peace beyond understand. A floating female figure extends her left arm in the direction of Mary and Jesus. Her left hand holds an olive branch, signifying peace. Her right arm extends downward toward a female figure in red. In her right hand is a fire weapon of some sort, perhaps suppressing armored man flanked by a canon. In front and below the woman in red sits a lion and lamb, perhaps a reference to Isaiah 11. 6: "The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together;and a little child will lead them." Beyond her, a figure holds a cornucopia, perhaps a reference to the heavenly banquet described in Revelation 19.9: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!" Other references to the heavenly banquet in scripture include Matthew 8:12, and Luke 22. A cherub to the right of St. Bernard holds a sign that reads fiat pax in virtute tua, May there be peace in your strength. Natoire lived and worked in Rome as the director of the Académie de France in Rome from 1751 to 1775. Toward the end of his career there, he underwent a renewal of faith. His spiritual life came into conflict with his life as an artist and an administrator. Some of the students called him a “religious bigot.” One might imagine that the iconography of Giordano’s work spoke to his personal understanding of faith and inspired his own artistic life. His art began to reflect this shift away from neoclassical style. Between 1754 and 1756, he began the ceiling fresco The Apotheosis of St. Louis (also known as the Glory of Saint Louis) depicting the heavenly ascension of King Louis IX of France, located in the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome.
